Martin Puchner is the Byron and Anita Wien Professor of Drama and of English and Comparative Literature at Harvard University. His prizewinning books cover subjects from philosophy to the arts, and his bestselling six-volume Norton Anthology of World Literature and his HarvardX MOOC (massive open online course) have brought four thousand years of literature to students across the globe. In The Written World, Mr. Puchner explores the importance of foundational texts to influence the development of nations and cultures. He points out how the influence of a text is impacted by the development of various forms of communication. And he does it by inserting himself into the story by visiting sites important to the stories and studying the texts.Some of the ideas that Mr. Puchner expounds upon are somewhat familiar, such as the importance of oral tradition and the impact of the invention of printing; however, he also explains some less familiar impacts such as the importance of note-passing in the formations of the Japanese The Tale of Genji and the power of the newspaper to Benjamin Franklin’s rise and ultimate influence. In most cases, the texts are old enough for anyone to see their influence and he makes strong cases for similarities in the work of modern authors like Walcott & Pamuk but he’s on shakier ground when he carries this idea forward. There simply haven’t been enough years passing to know for sure what kind of influence these texts will have.Still, this idea of the interplay of stories, technology, culture, and nations is an interesting one. It’s an idea that’s been around but no one has explored the concept with the kind of depth as Mr. Puchner without giving up the kind of readability which makes this book accessible to everyone. This is a book well worth the time, especially for those of us interested in stories.
Another addition to human = the storytelling animal genre. This one is better than most. He brings in a bit of his personal story ( on the advice of his editor) but mostly he has done a good job of summarized a selection of authors texts and words that have changed the world. He manages to make sure he has covered more than just the western world and he manages to include some details that will surprise those who may know a lot about one particular book (I learned some things about Cervantes). A breezy jargon free survey.
This is a fast paced survey of the highlights of world literature from Gilgamesh to Hardy Potter in terms of content and technology. I plan to re-read parts of Don Quixotic and discover a few new exotic works. A ton of fun.
In the 8th grade, or thereabouts, I read "How to Read a Book", from which I learned critical reading. Sixty years later, Puchner has once again spawned my interest in exploring literature.The concept of foundational texts is new to me, but it creates a paradigm for understanding why some works of literature have such a tremendous impact. Foundational texts also provide an framework for understanding conflicts.I rank this book as a must read.

A journey through the evolutionary history of written format combined with essays on important literary works and details only a scholar could share. I particularly liked the chapter on the Gutenberg printing press with the history of Martin Luther bible; also the chapter on Benjamin Franklin’s newpaper and the history of the revolution. I read mostly nonfiction, but found the book contained interesting history on important works of fiction through the ages. I didn’t share the authors enthusiasm for the Communist Manifesto, though it was revealing how such a philosophy can take hold at such an early age of the industrial revolution.
A well-written book by one who knows proper grammar (maybe that's more about the editor than the author) and is relatively easy to read. This book is somewhat tedious in its narration of the wide-ranging nature of its subject matter. I'm afraid I can't commend it, unless the prospective reader is intent on getting to the nit-picking practice of laid-out stolid formations. Does that last sentence help you understand what you'd be up against if you read this book?
