Review

"I find that this edition is uniquely the most useful book of its kind in existence. There is no other book that can remotely compete with it." -- T Jeong, Integraf "Most books on holography fit into one of two main forms; those for the amateur hobbyist holographer, full of nice clear pictures and no long words, or those for the full blown professional holographer, all equations and esoteric technical words. Thankfully Practical Holography does not fit in to either of these categories but covers both without being either patronising or overwhelming to the interested beginner or too lacking in detail and undemanding for the professional. I have used previous editions at levels ranging from short one day introductory courses through to MA and PhD. It is as up to date as any technical book can be and covers all aspects of holography in great detail from its inception to the present and offers some intriguing glimpses into the possible future of the medium . . . The text is concise and the diagrams clear and wide ranging, layout and approach, in the parlance of computer terminology, is user friendly and it is easy to find a personalised route through to suit all from the interested amateur to the professional holographer. . . For the serious holographer and any college library it is essential." -- Rod Murray, Consultant Holographer: former head of holography Royal College of Art, London. "So the third edition of Practical Holography by Graham Saxby comes as a welcome read ...In brief this book is an extremely comprehensive manual on all current aspects of holography, from basic theory to in-depth practical information including commercial and industrial processes... The diagrams throughoutfollow a clear generic style, making them easy to understand, and there are many photographs, including some very interesting colour plates of images made by various holographic artists ... The layout of the practical section is organised so that individuals can progressively work from one chapter to the next at their own pace, increasing their knowledge and understanding, and the complexity of the holographic systems they create... This book would suit anyone interested in the making of holograms be it from an artistic, commercial, industrial or research perspective. Taking into consideration the possible savings on equipment and raw materials, and potential time wasted, this comprehensive and extremely informative book will no doubt pay for itself in a very short time indeed, and I can strongly recommend it." -- Iqaki Beguiristain on the Holographer website. "I found the book to be extremely informative and I am certain it will be both popular and useful for its target audience. Considering the importance of holography in many different fields, it is almost a scandal that there are so few books on the subject and it is very reassuring to see that you and the author have gone to the effort to do a new edition, which i hope will be successful." -- John Brown "Graham Saxby's immense skill as a teacher is quite evident in this third edition . . . The wealth of information presented is staggering. From designing table layouts, making recording materials, designing and making your own optics and building an optical table, Graham covers everything an aspiring holographer would want to know. With his experience with both professional and amateur holographers he is able to provide manydifferent approaches to a problem allowing the reader to decide which solution fits his needs, skills and budget. This much awaited update was well worth the wait. It will be the bible for at least another 10 years and anyone who actually is making or wants to make holograms will find it indispensable. -- Colin Kaminski is an amateur holographer and holography enthusiast living in Napa, California. He runs the Holography Forum located at www.holographyforum.org "The release of Graham Saxby's third edition of practical holography shows how well the author understands what people need from a complete book on holography. He takes the reader through what a hologram is, the history of holography, what sort of light sources can be used to make a hologram, what kinds have been made to date and so on through to making and displying your own images. The book is written in a clear concise manner and is augmented by additional tips, definitions and observations in the margins as well as extensive source references at the end of each chapter. If you're new to the field or hobby of holography you should make this one of the first books you buy. Even if you're an old hand this bok will probably show you a few new tricks. ...I have no trouble at all recommending the third edition of Practical Holography to everyone interested in holography. There's something for every holographer in this book." -- Michael Harrison, The Holographer 5 2004 Full Review

It's a pity that Saxby's "Practical Holography" is no longer in print. It covers a lot of ground. While the tone is frequently technical and too mathematical for the layman, this is compensated for by the numerous practical illustrations and examples. The developer and bleach formulary is excellent. While I eventually settled on D-19 rather than mixing my own developers, I have not found another bleach as satisfactory or simple as his #2 formula. The section on building your own huge plastic lenses for collimation over large plate areas remains a novel and practical approach to an ongoing problem.Go to your local library and see if they have it. If they don't have it, see if they can get this on loan for you. It's well worth the effort to read.

Message from the author: This book is not out of print. The publisher has been taken over recently by Pearson Education, and the wires may have become crossed. If you are still stuck, e-mail me at graham.saxby@ukonline.co.uk Negotiations are under way to prepare a new edition with a different publisher. Watch this space.

Invaluable reference for contemporary holographers.

This is a very detailed and complete book on holography for the beginner to intermediate experimenters. Great explanations of how a laser functions, which lasers to use, optics, setups, etc.

Saxby's book is a must have for everyone involved in holography and is worth the high price. I have read several books on holography and this book is by far the best resource on practical holography. This books covers all the practical aspects of holography from setting up a holography lab to making advanced holograms. The explanations on the practical aspects are basic enough so that it can be understood by the interested layman. It also includes more in-depth sections on several aspects of holography such as a chemical analysis of developers, mathematical aspects of holography, Fourrier imaging,... which makes this book a good reference for the professional as well. The new layout of the third edition has dramatically improved the readability of the book. The third edition has been updated and includes the latest information on the new materials and laser diodes.

Further update on Practical Holography. Pearson Education, who now own Prentice-Hall, have sold the last copy , but - good news - they will reprint single copies to individual order, until the next edition comes out. I am now working on a third edition, to be published by Institute of Physics Publishing towards the end of 2002. Agfa materials are no longer available, but BB and Slavich emulsions work well with all the formulas in the 2nd Edn.

I had absolutely NO problems ordering the book at the adres/telephonenumber Graham gives. Ordering was done in a few minutes, price ca. 104 USD. Thanks, Graham !!
