This is such a lovely and intriguing book. I read it to my granddaughter on Chanuka when she was 5, and when she was 6 she asked for the story again, and remembered it much more vividly than I did! It tells a tale of Jews in Europe, starting from Spain, then Portugal, then Italy, and then kidnapped by pirates! (Boys will love this too!) They end up separated from family, but begin another happy family life in the Georgia Sea Islands, and never forget their Jewish heritage. While the events may seem too serious and the concept of long term history too abstract for a child, children are actually ready for seriousness, danger and drama. My granddaughter was intrigued by the pictures of family, their dramatic adventures, and the happy outcome of all that.It helped her to relate to past family history and to feel herself securely imbedded with family. The lesson of multiculturalism -multiracialism was not at all foreign to her own experience at school and as a multi ethnic part Jewish part Catholic family. It was a happy lesson for all of us. If we meet Carolivia someday we will give her our love
This is a fascinating family story with beautiful illustrations that begins with a Jewish woman expelled from Spain who eventually settles on the Georgia Sea Islands among African-American Geechees. She passes the memory of her Jewish heritage all the way down to her descendants in the present day.
An excellent children's picture book telling a fascinating, much-neglected part of American and Jewish history. This lovely book tells the story of Ms. Herron's family history from the time of the Christian re-conquest of Spain and the subsequent expulsion of Jews and Muslims all the way to the present in America. Family history can cross continents, nations, races, and lead back to surprising origins.
I'm an avid genealogist and this book is now in my bag when I teach about the process of family history. The author shows the importance of the people in doing family research. Love. love it.
"A Remarkable Family HIstory" is the subtitle of the book's title.Okay. The story is pleasant and the illustrations are nice. Itis not a favorite around here
Immigration stories provide a useful portal into the traditional values of different cultures. Carolivia Herron used her background as a Jew of African descent to formulate the story line for her historical picture book-Always an Olivia: A Remarkable Family History. The adventures of Carolivia's ancestors were just waiting to be retold. Jeremy Tugeau's colorful illustrations supplemented the narrative in a delightful way. The characters' emotions and the settings were brought to life.In the picture book, Carol learned from her Great-Grandma Olivia that part of her family resided in Spain during the Inquisition. To escape death, the family immigrated to Portugal where they were forced to hide their Jewish traditions from their neighbors. When their safety was once again called into question, they relocated a second time. This time they journeyed to Venice, Italy. One of the descendants of the family, Sarah, was kidnapped by pirates who took the girl to North Africa. The pirates hoped that wealthy Jews would pay a high ransom. On the pirate ship, Sarah was befriended by James, a young man pretending to be a pirate. James developed a plan that enabled him to remove Sarah safely from the ship. The Tripoli Jewish community, secretly arranged for the two to board a ship bound for America. The captain of the ship left the couple with a group of freed slaves from West Africa who lived on the Georgia Sea Islands. Even though the young couple assimilated into the dominant culture and adopted the West African and American traditions of their neighbors, they continued some Jewish traditions such as lighting candles on Friday night before Shabbat (Jewish Sabbath) began.Herron's research revealed a possible explanation for the captain's choice for disembarkation. In the 19th century, Jews were not considered Caucasian. It is the author's belief that the captain felt it would be safer for the couple to live among free nonwhites. The story can be enjoyed by all children. However, the historical components of the story will be better suited for upper elementary or middle school students.
Esteemed author Carolivia Herron shares the story based on her own fascinating history as a Jewish African-American. Always an Olivia is a heartwarming story of pride and family connections. Young readers will discover a unique piece of history through the eyes of young Carol Olivia as her grandmother passes on the story of her family - from one generation to another. From the Spanish inquisition to Jewish life in Portugal and Italy, Herron describes the joys and struggles of Jewish life. The youngest of readers might be alarmed when beautiful young Sarah is kidnapped by pirates, but Sarah's future brightens when one of the pirates aids in her escape. Like a real-life fairytale, they eventually fall in love and settle on the Georgia Sea Islands, among the descendants of West African slaves. Deep colored illustrations beautifully depict the characters and the scenery. Particularly noteworthy are the vibrant flowers depicted in the illustration of the Georgia Sea Islands, which contrast the darkness of the night sky when Sarah is in captivity. Herron includes a footnote of "Jews and Racial Designation," which will be of interest to teachers and students. Always an Olivia is a unique and important addition to any Jewish school or library. Although appropriate for readers as young as five, older children will be interested in the political and family history aspects of the story. This book is sure to be a favorite among teachers embarking on family genealogy projects. Highly recommended. Ages 5 and up. Reviewed by Barbara Bietz
