Every Utah Jazz fan will enjoy this book, but cringe at some of the incorrect information provided by the author, perhaps the result of years of training at the Deseret News.For example: at the time the book was written, Mark Eaton was no longer living with his wife Marci, as stated in the book; Zelma Beatty was never known as Thelmo Beatty; John Stockton’s oldest son is Houston, not Michael.A very good book could have been much better with some simple fact-checking.
I gave my hubby a copy for his birthday, and our whole family has enjoyed getting the inside scoop on all the trivia, legends, and myths surrounding the Jazz, starting from the early years. For instance, I always figured it was a myth that Karl Malone thought the Days of '47 Parade was to celebrate him. Now I know it's true, and why! How about John Stockton's short shorts? Larry Miller's confrontation with the Denver fan? Sloan's sudden retirement? It's a great read for any Jazz fan.
I read this with my 11-year-old son and was the best experience. We're both big Jazz fans and I didn't realize how little he knew of the history (ok, I found a bunch of stuff I didn't know either!!!) and it was fun to relive my favorite moments, many of which I shared with my father, again with my son. It was a generational experience that I'll cherish forever.
Perfect book for all Jazz fans. Very informative for less than knowledgable fans. Written by a good man.
Despite the relatively close-knit community in the Salt Lake City area, particularly among Utah Jazz fans, I don't know the author. I do know of him, however, and his reputation for honesty, accurate reporting and study on the Utah Jazz. This book is the definitive fan's experience, the "I was there!" for Jazz fanatics that weren't, the companion piece to Larry H. Miller's autobiography and the completion of the trifecta if you throw in John Stockton's book as well.In it, you'll relive memories told and illustrated in wonderfully fresh ways. You'll learn something new, even the most die-hard of fans. And not unimportantly, you'll suffer from wanting to read past your bedtime.Genessy is a good writer, with a dry wit and a welcoming tone. He invites you to be a Jazz fan, even if you're not, and he shows you why this team deserves a spot at the table of all-time best teams in sports. He's a good American.Read this book. Gift this book. Know this book. LOVE THIS BOOK.Take note, because team is everything...team and this book, that is.
I've been a Jazz fan for my whole life (30 years) and have really paid attention to and researched and followed the Jazz in the last 10 years. But even still, I've learned a lot of things in this book that make me feel more connected to the team. It will also arm my random Jazz fan knowledge bank, which I'm sure my wife will love.Great job Jody! I miss all your articles during the season from when you were a beat writer, but I always like to read whatever you've written.
This is a must-have for every Utah Jazz fan. The author is an amazing person and really knows the Jazz. Fun for the whole family!
