Three Reasons to Upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Windows 8 already runs on more than 100 million computers worldwide, but many Windows 8 owners feel lost in this strange new operating system. Fast forward one year later, and Microsoft has released Windows 8.1, a replacement to Windows 8. It's easily an improvement. In fact, here are three reasons Windows 8 owners should upgrade to Windows 8.1. Windows 8.1 is free Owners of older Windows versions must pay to upgrade to Windows 8.1, but Windows 8 and Windows RT owners can upgrade to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 RT without charge. To download and install the free upgrade, open the Windows Store app from the Start screen. Then start the upgrade with a click or tap on the "Update to Windows 8.1 for Free" option. It's easier to stay on the desktop Windows 8 constantly forced people to switch between Windows 8's two personalities: the traditional Windows desktop, and the strange new Start screen and its world of touch-oriented apps. After installing Windows 8.1, desktop lovers can spend more time on the desktop, insulated from the Start screen. Windows 8.1 lets you boot straight to the desktop, skipping the Start screen completely. Accordingly, Start screen lovers can prolong their stay on the Start screen, as its settings area now includes many features formerly limited to the desktop. SkyDrive storage Many people access their files from a variety of computers and devices. They may want to create a trip itinerary on their PC, but be able to access it on the fly from their phone. Other people need to access key files from the office. Many want access to their Desert Island Discs from any computer, tablet or phone. Microsoft's solution is SkyDrive, a free online storage space available from every folder in Windows 8.1. By storing your most important files on SkyDrive, you can read and update them from any computer, tablet or phone. Update your SkyDrive files from any computer or device, and those updated files are available to all of your other devices. Windows 8.1 includes seven gigabytes of free online storage space. Windows 8.1 offers many other perks, including the return of the Start button, and its App store now holds more than 100,000 apps. Facebook finally jumped in with its official Facebook app. Windows 8.1 shaves off Windows 8's rough edges, making it much less cumbersome to use. If you're running Windows 8, you'll find Windows 8.1 to be a great improvement over Windows 8.

This book the Windows 8.1 For Dummies is a superb book for so many reasons. First, it is written by Andy Rathbone, who has been writing many of the "For Dummies" computer books since 1992, his style of writing is interesting, very easy to follow, and even witty. This book is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to learn Windows 8.1 and if you are a beginner, or even a more seasoned computer user, this is a superb book. Although I am not a newbie to Windows or computers, I wanted to learn what the new features are in Windows 8.1 are and should I upgrade etc). Hence I purchased this book and am so glad that I did! What first impressed me about this book is that the book is for the Windows 8.1 beginner or even a seasoned Windows 8.0 user who wants to learn "what is new and better in Windows 8.1 and should I upgrade etc..PROS:-- Each chapter is like a mini lesson on Windows 8.1. These bring you to the most common things that you want to do in Windows 8.1 such as this I found in Chapter 22 on page 380 called Skip the Start Screen (how to boot to the Desktop (like in Windows 7) If this change is made then EVERY TIME Windows 8.1 starts the DESKTOP will appear rather than the START SCREEN. This chapter showed me how to do this. And there are illustrations of the menu selections so I knew what to check etc. Also, in Chapter One, this book explains about why 8.1 has so many advantages and gives more info on the upgrade info. It also describes the improvements in Windows 8.1 over Windows 8.0.-- Even though this is a beginner type of book, it also serves as reference book. Since I have finished reading the areas (new things about Windows 8.1), what I am doing is when I want to know something new, I look it up in the INDEX, as this is much faster to find it rather then sifting though chapters etc.-- In every chapter, he gives important info that is easy to learn and to follow without being boring! If you are a newbie on Windows 8 or especially 8.1, this book I believe will serve you well.Highly recommend this book!
When we first bought our new computer it had windows 8.1 After using it we found that we absolutely hated it. Tried working it and found we hated it all the more. Found that it sucked all the joy out of using the computer. We thought we would give the windows 8.1 for dummies a try. Reading this book helped us to understand the program. It worked us through all areas we had trouble with, and did it in a way that was easy to understand. We now love the windows 8.1 It has brought the joy in using the computer back
Like many, I ordered this book because I had a new computer with Windows 8 on it (I just upgraded to 8.1) and there were some things I just couldn't figure out in the new version. I'm not the most computer-savvy person--I do know enough to get around on the internet and for my own personal uses but I was just flummoxed by some of the things I found (or didn't find) in Windows 8. I've had the book for about a week and have puttered around on it here and there. Already I have learned things I didn't know before getting the book and there's a lot more for me to learn.I would give the book 5 stars except that some of the step-by-step directions in the book didn't work (for me) exactly as written. I was able to tweak the directions a bit and get it figured out but someone who may be very new to Windows 8 might not have known those tweaks.I like the writing style of the author--he is light-hearted and amusing, which makes it much more pleasant to sit down with the book and go through it from front to back. I look forward to learning a lot more from this book so I can feel like I have a good command of Windows 8. THAT will be an achievement!
I give this 5 stars because it is well written, easy to understand, to the point. I consider myself on the advanced side of an intermediate user, many years behind the keyboard, pretty well live on my computer, and been at it since DOS, Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista briefly, Windows 7, and now 8.1. Out of all of them I found the learning curve for 8.1 to be incredibly steep because it is essentially two operating systems intermeshed and I kept trying to use one while ignoring the other. I had used the 'For Dummies' series before and while they were more elementary that I needed in most cases, they way things are explained in them make the concepts and actions required so crystal clear they helped me through the slight changes in many basic tasks underwent. They helped with clarifying some of the differences when I went from XP to 7 which was maddening at first. 8.1 was initially like climbing Everest in tennis shoes during an ice storm so I grabbed this. In truth, I watched the DVD and it answered all the issues I was struggling with so that alone was worth the cost. I started to read the book but by then it was just too basic for me.The concept behind it, as the author describes and I paraphrase, is this book is for people who need to learn how to navigate around Windows 8.1 and learn the basic functions and how to do the most common things average computer users do with their PCs. While it does have some things of interest to more advanced users, there is not that much of it.This is truly for the novice and less experienced computer user who has no interest in developing a true Geek Streak. There's nothing wrong with that and no knock intended towards people who actually don't care about becoming computer gurus but do need some guidance. For them, I can't imagine anything more perfect could be found. For more advanced users as in folks more comfortable with computers and using them I would recommend the Missing Manual book on Windows 8.1 which I also own and reviewed.
