A very readable and enjoyable compendium of interviews with filmmakers and actors, highlighted by several dozen black-and white photos complementing the text. It helps to have experienced as a kid the explosion of science fiction movies in the early 1950's; however, I suspect that the text is intriguing enough on its own merit, that it will appeal to a broad audience. The book illuminates the complexities of making a movie, particularly one filmed on a low budget with limited studio support. The resourcefulness and inventiveness of directors, producers and actors alike is clearly evident. Just pick up the book, turn to any page, begin reading, and enjoy!
Lots of fun reading about the old days of science fiction & horror. Amazing how these movie makers put these B gems together on shoe string budgets back in the 50s &60s. Brought back lots of memories of the old neighborhood movie houses and drive-ins. Tom Weaver does a great job interviewing the actors, producers, directors & makeup folks.
This volume deals largely with behind the scenes personnel, who make for better interview subjects because 90% of the actors just say "Everyone was so nice."Some highlights:Mel Welles on Roger Corman. The Jerry Warren interview. Interviews with several different people who worked on such films as The Unearthly, Magnetic Monster, and The Black Sleep, allowing rare insight into not only how such films were made, but the way different participants' recollections can give the reader/fan a greater understanding of the filmmaking process. My only gripe is, for the price, the Amazon summaries should list all the interviewees in each of Weaver's books, so they can choose the ones that hold the most interest.Although, honestly, I never met a Tom Weaver book I didn't like.If you're thinking of taking the plunge, this is a good one to start with.
This may be the first collection of Tom Weaver's interviews and it's certainly one of the best. Weaver is to the world of interviews what Columbo was to television detectives. He's tracked down more obscure movie people than anyone on the planet!
Featured: John (Tarantula, Mole People) Agar... Samuel Z. Arkoff... John Ashley... Edwards Bernds... Susan (Wasp Woman) Cabot... Robert (Hideous Sun Demon) Clarke... director Gene Corman...Richard E. Cunha/Arthur A. Jacobs... David Duncan...Anthony Eisley...Harry J. Essex...Beverly Garland...Richard Gordon...Jack H. Harris...Howard W. Koch...Bernard L. Strock...Gloria (I Married a Monster From Outer Space) Talbott...Del Tenney...makeup man Harry (Navy vs. Night Monsters) Thomas...director Jerry Warren...and Mel (Little Shop of Horrors, Attack of the Crab Monsters) Welles.A great collection of behind-the-scenes details for 1950s/60s low budget (and sometimes bigger budget) scifi and horror movies.Writer/producer John Pollexfen describes how the crab monster in Attack of the Crab Monsters was put together and filmed.Ib Melchior describes how a marathon runner born without feet, a missing hand, and the other hand like a lobster claw, called in response to their call for people to play monsters and volunteered to play a mutant. The man was prominently featured in the movie, The Time Travelers.Actor Paul Marco talks about his friendship with Bela Lugosi while filming movies for Ed Wood and witnessing Lugosi shooting up. Lugosi was hooked on moriphine during hospital treatment for a back injury years before.)Director Bernard Kowalksi relates how the two stunt guys were hired to show up with costume as the leeches in Attack of the Giant Leeches, and how they cobbled together their leech costumes with raincoat material.Beverly Garland talks about how she kept cracking up during The Alligator People, especially during the tender moments between the wife and transformed husband, and they almost had to shoot her from behind.Lots more. Love this stuff.
28 interviews ranging from John Agar to Mel Welles, with a very well done index to boot. Indeed, I find browsing the index great fun, as many favorites are touched on during the interveiws (ex: Jerry Warren's memories of Bruno Ve Sota and Harry Thomas' stories of Tor Johnson.) If you are a B Monster Movie fan, this is a must.
